About Us

Knaresborough Choral Society was founded in 1986. We are a friendly choir currently with over 60 members. We perform three concerts a year, Christmas, Spring and Summer. We are very much part of the local community and enjoy performing around Knaresborough for events such as the Christmas market and Spring Fair.

We operate on a not-for-profit basis supporting ourselves through members' subscriptions, fundraising and charitable donations.

Our Musical Leaders

      Our Music Director

Robert Marsh MA (Oxon) FRSA, FRCO, ARCM

Robert Marsh joined Knaresborough Choral Society in January 2013. He was educated at the Royal Northern College of Music, Keble College, Oxford (where he was Organ Scholar and won and Honours Degree in music), and Jesus College, Cambridge. He became a fellow of the Royal College of Organists at the age of twenty and undertook studies in orchestral conduction whilst in Cambridge.
As a conductor he has worked with the English Northern Philharmonia, the National Band of the Royal British Legion, The King’s Own Division Normandy Band and the Manchester Camerata. Highlights of his work as an award winning choral conductor have included appearances at the Leith Hill Festival and performances of Handel’s Messiah, J.S. Bach’s B minor Mass and St John Passion, Mozart’s Requiem, Haydn’s’ Harmoniemesse, Elgar’s The Spirit of England, and The Armed Man by Karl Jenkins.
As director of music at Reigate Grammar School, Robert was responsible for founding the School’s highly successful tradition of musical theatre productions. The comedian, actor and children’s author David Walliams took part in one of these productions as a pupil of the school and he and Robert were part of a television documentary film about it for ITV.
Robert leads choral workshops for the National Association of Choirs. He is an adjudicator with the British and International Federation for Music, Dance and Speech, and is an examiner for the London College of Music (University of West London).
He is also organist at Christ Church Skipton.

Our Accompanist

Beryl Pankhurst

Beryl has been our accompanist since 2002. She was born and educated in Liverpool. After a brief career in banking she took up a place at the Royal Manchester College of Music where she received a distinction in recital.
Although Beryl has performed as a soloist on many occasions, her main passion is in accompanying. Her extensive career includes playing for many distinguished soloists and she works regularly with members of Opera North. She is much in demand for festival and examination accompanying and enjoys being repetiteur for an annual choral summer course. Her musical taste is very varied and she is equally at home playing light music. She also enjoys giving duet recitals with a regular partner.
